    I had a similar experience when I was camping and house surfing my way across America in 2019. I stayed with a couch surfer in New Mexico who was an art dealer and he had a really unique house that was built into the side of the wall underneath an underpass of a bridge. The door was a whole concrete slab that blended into the side of the wall. It was clear he was quite wealthy and young and he made a remark after I had trouble finding the place that the police hadn't been able to find it once before. I was a bit thrown as my previous couch surfing experiences had been where I slept on literal couches. I had my own room and bathroom but it didn't have a lock on the door and there were lots of female hair products in the bathroom. When I started to make my ramen soup dinner in his kitchen he invited me out to a wine bar and restaurant his friend owned in town, he said since his friend owned it we'd probably get a free dinner. I agreed to go with him, as I was in a stage of life where I was saying yes to more things. We got to the restaurant and his friend was super nice and served us lots of interesting things for free, then he told us how he was a sommelier and that he had several bottles of $3000-$5000 bottles of wine in his cellar, and he showed us pictures of the labels. He invited us to his house to try one. I again agreed and went with them.We opened a $5000 bottle of wine and had a great time. THey asked me how I was a solo female traveling alone and not afraid and I said that I believed most people were good, trying to appeal to their sense of goodness but I was scared shitless. I also felt super naive and out of my depth. Halfway through the evening the guy I was staying with mentioned casually that someone from his murder club was doing something or other. I was like....your what? Then he got all embarrassed and was like oh yeah I'm in a murder mystery dinner party group. My phone had died and I was terrified that I would be murdered. When we got back to his place I couldn't sleep all night and at 6am I got up, packed my bag and snuck out quietly and checked the bottom of my car for a tracker. Then I drove out of there. However, to this day this guy and I are friends online and we share music. So it turned out he was just a nice guy. I nonetheless felt super vulnerable. I think it's always good to follow your instincts and leave when you feel unsafe.

    Hallo Floor, Bedankt voor jouw video. Ondertussen al een aantal keer gekeken, mooi de hele ervaring zowel fysiek als mentaal vastgelegd. Ik vroeg mij af of je mij misschien tips wil geven. Ik heb de Hardanger 3 maal doorkruist, Jotunheimen 3 maal en dan een 5 tal jaar geleden voor de eerste keer in een hut in Jotunheimen de kaart van de MassIV zien hangen. Uitdaging op mijn lijf geschreven maar niet aan toe gekomen omdat ik toen net mijn gezinnetje stichtte. Ondertussen 2 zonen, eentje 3,5 jaar en eentje 2 maanden oud. Hoewel dit jaar weer kersvers papa hoop ik er toch na al die tijd eens van tussenuit te glippen en weer naar mijn geliefde Noorwegen te keren. Helaas geen 14 daagse hiking maar een 7 of 8 effectieve stapdagen. De geest wilt wild de natuur in en kilometers malen, het lichaam wilt rust en slapen. Een evenwicht oefening tussen ontspannen en genieten en toch de fysieke inspanning leveren om plekken te bereiken waar je jezelf even helemaal alleen op aarde voelt. Je weet denk ik wel wat ik bedoel. De volledige MassIV gaat niet lukken, ik hoef hem ook niet officieel op mijn palmares. Maar ik twijfel... beperk ik mij tot enkel Breheimen wat mij qua diversiteit wel enorm lijkt aan te spreken en maar ik daar een rondje of volg ik toch een deel van de MassIV en dan de vraag doe ik het zoals jij vanuit het zuiden of toch beginnen in Breheimen... Heb je tips voor een route, voor iemand met ervaring maar beperkte tijd en weinig vrije tijd en energie voor deftige voorbereiding. Waar vind ik in slechts 8 stapdagen dat gevoel van rust, vrijheid, tijd met jezelf en toch ook de nodige pit qua fysiek. Alvast bedankt voor tips Floor. Groeten Kris

    • @floordenil
      @floordenil Місяць тому

      Hey Kris! Als je een deel van de wandeling wil wandelen, raad ik Breheimen en Jotunheimen aan (het Noordelijke deel). Die zijn het spectaculairst, en bieden toch diversiteit. Ik ben daar op 6 dagen doorheen gewandeld, wat goed te doen is :). Als je informatie over elke dag wil, kan je mijn gids eens bekijken: daarin staat alle info over de wandeling, dag per dag. Heel veel wandelplezier!

      @@floordenil Bedankt voor je antwoord. Vliegtickets maandag geboekt. Nog niets in steen gebeiteld maar vertrek wellicht vanuit Finse en mik op Fondsbu. Lijken mij 2 locaties die efficiënt met openbaar vervoer te bereiken zijn. Ik kijk nog wel eens op de kaart wat ik onderweg nog kan meepikken. De Massiv voorbij Fondsbu lijkt me met mijn beperkte tijd lastig om terug vervoer naar huis te bereiken maar ik zie wel. Benieuwd waar de trail u deze zomer brengt.

    Did the Skye Trail Last July. No midges, it was all about the rain 😢. Camped 6 nights, 1st & last night in excellent campsite in Broadford where I left my car for a small fee. I walked north to Portree, then bus to Rubha Hunish and walked back to Portree, made bus logistics easier. Great trail, met very few other hikers, maybe max 20 over the 5 days. My biggest mistake was heavy leather boots which got wet first day and tore my feet to shreds. Best wild camp slots for me, Camusunary Bay, where I was the only camper, and it was magical. Also at Loch Hasco below the Quaraing, again I had it to myself. Great trail, get there before it gets too popular 😂

    Hi Floor, I have a question about the quilts. Why have you decided to switch from EE Revelation to Hyberg? Are you satisfied with the new quilt? Hey! I switched to Hyberg because I’m striving towards an all-European setup (most people here are living in Europe and I don’t want to inspire them to pay those big import costs, ordering in America). I’m very satisfied with both! I’m 1m75 and the Hyberg quilt is big enough for me (I sleep on my side and stomach), so I think you’ll be fine :).

      If you’ve got some experience doing long distance hikes, I’d recommend the Skye Trail. It’s less crowded and the scenery is more beautiful. However, if you’re just starting out, the West Highland Way is a great option, as there are many hikers on the trail and you pass by many towns :).
